PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The visiting Western Connecticut State University Wolves posted a 2-1 victory over the Rhode Island College Anchormen in Little East Conference (LEC) men's soccer action this afternoon at Alumni Stadium. WestConn finishes the 2023 regular season with a 12-4-3 overall record and a 5-1-2 mark in the Little East. Rhode Island College ends up at 8-4-5 overall and 4-2-2 in the league. The Wolves have finished with double-digit win totals six years in a row. Both teams will begin LEC Championship Tournament play next week.
The first half ended scoreless, despite 12 shots by the Wolves. WestConn broke the stalemate in the 52nd minute when
Eduardo Vargas (Norwalk, Conn.) put in a rebound after the initial bid by sophomore
Maximus Vigo (Canton, Mich.) was saved by Anchorman goalie Jake Reed. Sophomore
Filipe Dutra (Naugatuck, Conn.) gave the Wolves a 2-0 lead in the 63rd minute with his goal on a direct kick after a Rhode Island College foul. Jonathan Oliveira cut the home team's deficit in half with a goal in the 71st minute, but neither defense yielded a shot-on-goal the rest of the way.
Zachary Benson (Milford, Conn.) had a save for WestConn and Reed totaled three saves.
