DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University Wolves had won five straight games on five straight shutouts and had not yielded a goal in 470 consecutive minutes, but the visiting University of Massachusetts-Boston Beacons scored twice in the second half to steal a 2-1 win this afternoon at Westside Complex. WestConn falls to 7-5-4 overall and 4-1-1 in the Little East Conference (LEC), while the Beacons improve to 5-3-6 overall and 3-0-3 in the league. The Wolves visit Wesleyan next on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
WestConn struck first in the 36th minute when junior back
Ella Demers (Northfield, Conn.) beat a Beacon player to a loose ball and quickly got it to classmate
Annie Sobolewski (Legrangeville, N.Y.) near the left sideline. Sobolewski found sophomore
Sophia Onek (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) in the middle of the field and Onek landed a well-placed shot into the back of the net to give the Wolves their 26th goal in a row without allowing one to their opponents. The first half ended, 1-0, with statistics almost entirely tied except for the score and a 2-0 edge on corner kicks for UMass-Boston.
The visitors ended WestConn's lengthy streak of perfect defense in the 57th minute when a shot by Kaylee Haynes hit the post and then took an off bounce to end up in the goal. Wolves rookie goalie
Gracen Regan (Monroe, N.J.) had not been scored upon in her previous 336 minutes of play. WestConn peppered Beacon goalie Isabella O'Connell with shots after that, forcing her to make nine of 12 saves in the final 33 minutes of the contest.
Both teams had several chances to take the lead in the second stanza, as Wolves junior forward
Suzana Imetovski (Seymour, Conn.) hit the post in the 64th minute and was stymied by O'Connell on a rocket by O'Connell in the 83rd minute, while Beacon sophomore McKenna Hallinan found the far post on a shot at an empty net after Regan had come far out of the net in the 74th minute. Haynes fed Andrea Rivera who beat Regan low and to her right for the clincher with 5:52 left in the game. Wolves sophomore
Casey Papp (Seaford, N.Y.) nearly forced O'Connell into her own goal on a high attempt from just outsude the box, but UMass-Boston held on to stay unbeaten in their last seven games (3-0-4).
