Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Wolves Fall to Worcester Polytech, 2-0

DANBURY, Conn. – After a season opening win on Thursday, the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team fell to 1-1 overall with a 2-0 loss to visiting non-conference opponent Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.

Senior netminder Kristen Roessler (Danbury, Conn.) finished with seven saves for the Wolves to keep things close. Senior goalie Kelsey Leach (Tolland, Conn.) notched six stops to earn the win for the Engineers, now 2-0 overall.

The WestConn defense was forced to play tough in the opening half. Senior Samantha Larkin (Wallingford, Conn.) and classmate Julia DePalma (Kings Park, N.Y.) broke up a pair of rushes for the hosts in the early going.

However, the visitors continued to apply pressure and eventually pierced the scoring column. Senior forward Lilly Proulx (New Boston, N.H) took a pass from junior forward Hannah Wolfgang (Holliston, Mass.) and lofted a shot from 20 yards out that eluded Roessler and squeezed just underneath the crossbar, good for a 1-0 WPI lead in the 27th minute of play.

Moments later, WestConn appeared to even the count when senior forward Myah Croze (Bristol, Conn.) raced to gather a ball and connect with the twine. However, the play was called offsides.
The Engineers extended the lead to 2-0 when senior forward Caitlin Bonavita (Wilbraham, Mass.) blasted a shot off the left post, quickly gathered her own rebound and fired another shot just inside the iron this time.

WPI would maintain the advantage into the break and throughout the scoreless second half. WestConn displayed their tenacity, controlling most of the play in the stanza but could not find the back of the net.

The Wolves return to action when they host non-league foe Trinity College on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
