DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team will face host SUNY Cortland in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championships in upstate New York on Saturday, May 14. The Wolves, 15-4 and winners of the Little East Conference Championship this past weekend, and the Red Dragons, also 15-4 and winners of the State University of New York Athletic Conference on Saturday at SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex at 1 pm. Saturday's winner will take on Roger Williams University, 16-1, in the second round on Sunday, also at 1 pm.
WestConn earned the program's second-straight NCAA tournament berth following Saturday's 17-4 victory over Plymouth State University in the league championship at The Westside Athletic Complex. Cortland defeated Geneseo, 16-14 in the SUNYAC title match, also on Saturday.
Junior
Anna Schipf (Babylon, N.Y.) was named tournament Most Outstanding Player after making six saves against the Panthers on Saturday. She and the WestConn offense raced out to a 12-0 advantage to all but put the result out of reach with 4:53 left in the second period.
Alexa Riggio (Massapequa, N.Y.) led all scorers with six goals while
Vicky Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) and
Dominique DeMarsico (Danbury, Conn.) added four goals each for the Wolves.
On the season, DeMarsico has scored 66 goals and 25assists for a team-leading 91points. Gracy and Riggio follow closely behind with 55 and 45 goals, respectively, this spring.
Defense and a strong presence on the draw controls again in 2022 has been integral in the Wolves' success this season.
Schipf has a miniscule 8.51 goals-against average while making 123 saves between the pipes. She has a strong group in front of her in the defensive third, with
Meghan Lorenzen (Stony Brook, N.Y.),
Erica Romeo (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and
Katie Keane(Pleasantville, N.Y.) support Schipf around the arch.
From the center draw, Lorenzen has registered a team-best 78 draw controls and 41 caused turnovers. Keane follows with 47 ground balls and 33 caused turnovers.
Lorenzen's older sister Hannah is a graduate-student attack for the Red Dragons.
WestConn will attempt to avenge its 17-8 loss at Cortland State back on March 25. WestConn added the non-league contest with only a few days to prepare after one of its games was canceled during its training trip to Florida the previous week.
