Softball Celebrates Senior Day

DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University softball team closed out the 2022 campaign with a pair of shut-out losses to visiting University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 5-0 and 4-0, at Westside Field on Senior Day.  The Wolves celebrated the careers of three seniors, Nicole Antonowicz, Erin Keeley and Jillian Komornik following the day's action.

Sophomore hurler Kaitlyn Shirshac enjoyed a stellar afternoon, capturing both complete-game victories and tossing a no-hitter in the second game.  On the day, she allowed just five hits, struck out 19 and walked two.  In the nightcap, she whiffed 13 Wolves and now 112 strike outs in 120 and 2/3 innings and improves to 13-2 from the center circle.

Back to the opener.  The Corsairs, now 30-8-1 overall and 13-3 in the Little East Conference, scattered seven hits with Larissa Piessens going 2-for-4 with a double, one run batted in and two runs scored.  Kinu Takasugi was the only other UMD player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with one run scored.

Piessens scored a run in the top of the first inning and both side held until the visitors took advantage of a pair of WestConn miscues in its final trip to the plate and went on to score four runs.

Sarah Milyko, 3-5, suffered the loss after giving up one run on three hits and struck out one over the first four innings.  Olivia Bordenaro closed out the final three innings, struck out three and walked one.

Komornik registered a pair of singles in the first game to lead the hosts.

The Corsairs tallied nine hits in the nightcap including six off of starter and loser Hailey Golembiewski, who had to leave the game with an injury in the fourth inning.  She drops to 7-11 on the season, struck out three and walked four in her final outing of the year.

Kate Condon went 3-for-3, laced a double and drove in a pair of runs while Dyonna Rodas had a pair of singles in four trips to the dish.

WestConn close out the campaign at 15-25 overall and 2-14 in the LEC.

UMass Dartmouth finished tied with University of Southern Maine in the final LEC regular-season standings, but earned the third seed in the upcoming LEC Tournament, as the Huskies split a pair with top seed and regular-season champion Eastern Connecticut State University back on April 2.  The six-team double-elimination tournament begins on Thursday, May 5 in Mansfield, Conn.
