DANBURY, Conn. - Sophomore guard
Nicole Vivian (New Milford, Conn.) led the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team with 17 points, but for the second straight day, Keene State College prevailed, 55-46 at Feldman Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Vivian played nearly every minute for WestConn, which drops to 6-14 overall and 1-10 in the Little East Conference. She finished with three rebounds, three assists and three steals today.
The Owls, now 7-12 overall and 4-8 in the league were led by freshman guard Aryanna Murray's 28 points. She too filled out the stat sheet with nine rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists in 39 minutes of action.
Sophomore forward
Gabrielle Franks (Madison, Conn.) came off the bench to lead WestConn with 10 rebounds.
Kenzie Durnford hauled down a game-high caroms for the winners.
Following a short jumper and an ensuing free throw from Murray at the 8:00 minute mark of the first stanza, Keene State would not trail the rest of the way.
Michelle LaBronte canned a long shot from beyond the arc to give the visitors a 13-point advantage, 26-13, with 6:05 remaining in the first half. WestConn trimmed its deficit to six points, 27-21 following a jumper from
Ashley Rilley (Orangeburg, N.Y.) at the 3:24 mark of the same period. However, the Owls rattled off eight straight points to take a 14-point lead into intermission.
KSC led by as many as 16 points in the second half before WestConn drew within seven points, 50-43, following a short jumper from Vivian in the lane with 56 seconds left in the contest.
WestConn plays host to Castleton University on Saturday, February 12. Game time is set for 2 pm, ahead of the men's team battling the Spartans at 4 pm.
The Owls venture to University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Wednesday, February 9 for a 5:30 pm meeting with the Corsairs.
