Wolves Edged in 2OT's at Southern Maine in LEC Final

GORHAM, Maine - Despite an equalizing goal to force overtime from sophomore forward Suzana Imetovski (Seymour, Conn.), the second-seeded Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team was edged at top-seeded host Southern Maine, 3-1, in double overtime of the LEC Championship game on Saturday night at Hannaford Field.

With the loss, the Wolves season came to an end at 13-7-1 overall, while the Huskies improved to 17-3 and claimed the LEC crown along with an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The hosts pierced the scoring column 8:03 into the contest when Catriona Gould tallied her 20th goal of the season. Imetovski nearly tied the game up but her shot banged off the post.

The visitors answered in the 57th minute of play when Imetovski slipped her 13th goal of the season just inside the far post. Southern Maine nearly struck back less than three minutes later but their shot deflected off the crossbar, setting up overtime.

The Huskies would score in each extra session to come away with the victory. Gaby Panagakos took a low cross across the box and buried her seventh goal of the season into the open side of the twine at 95:41.

The hosts tacked on an insurance marker in the second overtime when Julia McKennon connected for her 12th goal of the campaign when she fired home a rebound from a sharp-angled shot.

For the game, Southern Maine held a slight lead in shots, 28-24, while WestConn had an advantage in corner kick attempts, 9-7.

WestConn sophomore goalkeeper Kasey Donnelly (New Milford, Conn.) finished with eight saves, while Southern Maine netminder Breanna Atwood turned aside 10 shots.
