DANBURY, Conn. - Senior running back
Chad Blaszky (Selden, N.Y.) rushed for a game-high 166 yards on 27 carries including three touchdowns to lift the Western Connecticut State University football team to a 41-21 victory over visiting Fitchburg State College on Senior Day at the Westside Athletic Complex.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 7-3 overall and 6-2 in MASCAC play, while the Falcons fell to 1-8 and 0-7.
WestConn sophomore quarterback
Dennis Riordan (New City, N.Y.) put forth a solid effort thru the air, connecting on 13-of-25 passing attempts for 185 yards including a pair of scoring strikes to senior wide receiver
Michael Matich (Floral Park, N.Y.).
Keyshawn McCurdy led the Falcons charge, finishing with five receptions for 107 yards and a trio of touchdowns.
The hosts jumped out to an early 14-0 first quarter lead. They began their first drive from the Fitchburg 45-yard line and Blaszky capped off the six play drive with a one-yard burst into the end zone. After forcing another three-and-out, the Wolves started their ensuing drive from the same spot as the first - in Falcon territory. This time Matich hauled in a catch from six yards away, stretching the gap to 14-0 after junior kicker
Anthony Weidtman's (Nesconset, N.Y.) second PAT of the day.
WestConn extended the advantage to 21-0 midway thru the second quarter when Blaszky plowed across the goal line from a yard out. Fitchburg pierced the scoring column 45 seconds before halftime when McCurdy snagged an eight yard toss from Logan Wilson, shrinking the gap to 21-7.
However, the Wolves retaliated on the ensuing play when sophomore Jaicob Tejada (Valley Stream, N.Y.) raced 90-yards for the kickoff return to make it 27-7 at the break.
The hosts widened the margin to 34-7 when Matich notched his second score of the day on a 13-yard grab. The Falcons countered when McCurdy caught a pair of scoring strikes (69 yards and 22 yards) later in the third to get within 13 points. However, Blaszky rounded the scoring out with a five-yard run in the fourth, cementing the 41-21 victory.
