Roy Penn-Consentino (Liberty, N.Y.) rushed 14 times for 116 yards and scored one touchdown and freshman quarterback
John Giller (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) completed 14 of 27 passes for 234 yards and tossed a pair of touchdowns as Western Connecticut State University defeated visiting Westfield State University, 42-6 at the Westside Athletic Complex on Friday night.
Penn-Consentino scored a 69-yard touchdown run, with 36 seconds remaining in the first stanza and the point-after from
Anthony Weidtman (Nesconset, N.Y.) gave the hosts a 14-0 advantage. Weidtman was a perfect 6-of-6 on extra-point attempts tonight.
Giller closed out the first half with a 78-yard TD toss to freshman wide out
Julian Ferguson (Enfield, Conn.) and a 41-yard strike to
Michael Matich (Floral Park, N.Y) and WestConn was quickly doubled its lead and went into intermission with a 28-0 lead.
Ferguson finished with a pair of catches for 78 yards.
Westfield, 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the league, got on the scoreboard with 6:47 left in the third quarter when Peyton Capizzi (East Setauket, N.Y.) plowed in from the one yard line. Danny Farrell's (Milford, Mass.) try after hit the right upright and the score stood at, 28-6.
Capizzi rushed 13 times for 18 yards and completed 7-of-21 passes for an additional 113 yards.
OT Thomas (Coral Springs, Fla.) led the Owls' ground game with 20 carries for 133 yards, an average of 6.7 yards per carry.
WestConn, now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC), was led via the airways by
Messiah Diggs (Rahway, N.J.) who had five catches for 56 yards.
"We came out today and played a solid game," acknowledged WestConn head coach
Joe Loth. "We also realize we need to continue to improve to have the type of season we want to have."
Defensively,
Nosa Uzamere (Hempstead, N.Y.) collected a game-high 11 tackles, including eight in the second half.
Joseph Dumoulin (Holyoke, Mass.) recorded a team high six tackles for Westfield State.
WestConn travels to Bridgewater State University for a MASCAC challenge next Friday, September 24. Kick-off is slated for 6 pm.
The Owls are at Framingham State University for a 12 noon tilt next Saturday, September 25.
