BOSTON, Mass. - Despite a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds from senior forward
Katelyn Fanning (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y), the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell at UMass-Boston, 70-44, in a Little East Conference matchup on Tuesday night at Clark Athletic Center.
With the loss, WCSU dropped to 6-3 overall, while the Beacons improved to 2-6.
Junior guard
Ashley Rilley (Orangeburg, N.Y.) and sophomore
Nicole Vivian (New Milford, Conn.) added nine points apiece for the visitors.
Meg Dixon led four UMass-Boston players in double figures with a game-high 23 points. Jasharee Greene tallied a double-double of her own with 14 points and a game-high 12 boards, while Kaylee Haynes dished out nine assists.
The visitors opened the game when sophomore guard
Maggie Nardini (Sandwich, Mass.) drilled a three-pointer followed by a Fanning layup. However, the hosts would counter with a 13-2 run and would not look back.
WestConn trimmed the advantage to 21-20 in the second quarter when sophomore forward
Gabrielle Franks (Madison, Conn.) knocked down a jumper but the Beacons answered with another spurt to maintain a 35-26 lead at the break.
UMass-Boston would widen the gap to as many as 30 points in the second half before rounding the count out at 70-44.
WestConn will look to rebound after a three-week layoff when they host non-league foe Elms College in the Hat City Tournament on December 30 at 4 p.m.
