WestConn Wins 12th Little East Title With A Shutout Win Over UMass Boston, 2-0

DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University team captured its 12th Little East Conference Women's Soccer Championship title following its 2-0 victory over University of Massachusetts Boston at the Westside Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman forward Suzana Imetovski (Seymour, Conn.) scored an insurance goal on Saturday and was named Tournament Most Outstanding Player.  She assisted on a goal in Thursday's semi-final 3-0 win over University of Southern Maine and now has nine goals and 13 assists for 31 points in her first collegiate campaign.

With the win, WestConn, now 18-1, earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III National Championships which begin next weekend.  This will be WestConn's 15th trip to the national tournament and fourth in six years under head coach Alex Harrison.

WestConn took a 1-0 lead before a minute had elapsed in the contest on Saturday.  Junior midfielder Skylar Jorge (Trumbull, Conn.) followed up her own shot and deposited the ball past the diving Beacons' keeper Maria Spylios (Leominster, Mass.).  The unassisted marker was Jorge's seventh goal of the season.

UMass Boston, which ends its season at 13-6-2, had several quality attempts, especially in the opening minutes of the second half, but could not get one by senior keeper Karly Martin (Bristol, Conn.)

Martin finished with six saves on the afternoon despite dealing with discomfort from a collision in front of the net in the first stanza.  She now has five individual clean sheets on the season and was involved in four others as the WestConn defense has allowed just eight goals in 19 games.  She and her squad did not yield a goal against a Little East Conference opponent during the regular or post season.

WestConn finished with a 19-13 advantage in shots attempts and edged out the Beacons with five corner kicks to the visitor's four.

Spylios finished with seven saves in the loss.
