Women's Soccer Clinches LEC Regular Season Crown With 3-0 Win Over UMass-Boston

DANBURY, Conn. - Senior goalkeeper Karly Martin (Bristol, Conn.) notched some highlight reel worthy saves, while classmate forward Myah Croze (Bristol, Conn.) tallied a goal and an assist to lead the 24th-ranked WestConn women's soccer squad to a 3-0 victory over visiting UMass-Boston in a Little East Conference matchup Saturday night at the Westside Athletic Complex.

With the win, WestConn clinched the LEC regular season crown and the top seed in the upcoming LEC Postseason Tournament slated to begin on November 2nd.

The game was much closer than the final score indicated. The Beacons nearly opened the scoring when senior Allie Crawford (Kingston, Mass.) pulled away for a breakaway attempt with just under 16 minutes remaining in the first half. However, Martin charged towards her, cutting down the angle to record a stellar save. It would remain scoreless at halftime.

The hosts pierced the scoring column less than three minutes into the second stanza when junior Julia DePalma (Kings Park, N.Y.) banged a header into the twine off a corner kick blast from sophomore Hannah Daly (Newtown, Conn.).

Moments later, UMass-Boston nearly answered but their redirection shot sailed wide of the top corner by inches.

Croze then found rookie Suzana Imetovski (Seymour, Conn.) streaking up the field with a nifty pass. Imetovski proceeded to dribble around the goalkeeper and boot home her eighth goal of the season, extending the WestConn lead to 2-0.

UMass-Boston had several quality chances but Martin came up with several spectacular stops before Croze rounded out the scoring with her LEC leading 23rd goal of the campaign.

Martin improved to 15-1 overall and turned aside seven Beacon shots, while junior netminder Maria Spylios (Leominster, Mass.) fell to 8-4-2 and finished with nine saves for the visitors. Shots and corner kick attempts were nearly even for both teams.

Also honored before the game were seniors Martin, Erin Doris (Naugatuck, Conn.), Nicolette Stocks (Bethel, Conn.), Marysia Slowik (Norwalk, Conn.), Brooke Gallagher (Middleton, N.Y.), Clara Lazaro (Norwalk, Conn.), Lillian Daniels (Bethel, Conn.) and Skylar Couillard (Newington, Conn.).

WestConn returns to action at non-conference foe Fitchburg State on Tuesday before rounding out the regular season slate against LEC opponent Southern Maine. They will then receive a first round bye (November 2) in the LEC Postseason Tournament before hosting a semifinal matchup on November 4.
