DANBURY, CT - Three different players posted wins in both singles and doubles play to lead Western Connecticut State University to a 5-4 Little East Conference women's tennis dual-match victory over UMass Dartmouth Sunday afternoon on the Westside Courts.
Senior Emma Chapman (Danbury, CT) and graduate student Carole Allers (Wilton, CT) notched straight set wins at the top two singles' flights for the host Colonials, and the duo teamed up for an 8-2 triumph at number one doubles.
Freshman Sarah Silva (Brookfield, CT) also won in straight sets at fifth singles and teamed up for an 8-5 victory with senior Pooja Dudhedia (Brookfield, CT) at the number three pairs for WestConn, which is now 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the LEC.
"We are happy with our win today," announced WestConn head coach Shawn Stillman. "UMass Dartmouth is always a strong team and it was today as well, so we knew it would not come easy. Winning two of the three doubles' matches made the difference."
For the Corsiars, now 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the league, juniors Rachel Aftandilian (Watertown, CT) and Jordan Martin (Taunton, MA) collected straight set wins at the number three and six singles positions, respectively, in the setback for the visiting Corsairs.
Senior Melanie Wong (Somerset, MA) overcame a first set setback to win a three-set decision at the number four singles spot. Martin and junior Michelle Aftandilian (Watertown, MA) combined for an 8-0 triumph at second-flight combos to account for UMass Dartmouth's other point of the day.
WestConn travels to Madison, NJ on Monday afternoon for a non-league dual-match with FDU-Florham, Match time is set for 4:00 pm.
