DANBURY, CT – Sophomore Kaleigh Panek (Shelton, CT) tallied two goals to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer squad to a 5-1 victory over visiting non-league foe John Jay College on Wednesday night at the Westside Athletic Complex. It marked the fifth straight win for the Colonials as they upped their record to 7-4-1, while the Bloodhounds fell to 5-5.
The host broke the ice 8:02 into the game when senior midfielder Bailey McCollum (Cold Spring, NY) blasted a penalty shot kick into the twine. Less than two minutes later, rookie midfielder Myah Croze (Bristol, CT) took a pretty pass from sophomore Brooke Gallagher (Middletown, NY) and fired a shot just inside the left post, widening the gap to 2-0.
Moments later, Panek gathered a loose ball for a breakaway. She dribbled right past the charging John Jay goalie and chipped the ball into an open net. Junior Osheonna Israel (South Windsor, CT) added another scoring strike for the Colonials, setting the count at 4-0 at the break.
Panek would add her team-leading 11th goal of the year in the second half after gathering a cross from sophomore Lillian Daniels (Bethel, CT). John Jay would pierce the scoring column in the 83rd minute when senior Medina Mulic (Queens, NY) shot the ball just underneath the crossbar, rounding the scoring out at 5-1.
"We've played well over this last stretch of games. We definitely have some momentum heading into our conference matchup with Keene State this weekend," stated WestConn head coach Alex Harrison following the action.
The Colonials head to Little East Conference nemesis Keene on Saturday at 2 p.m.
