TROY, NY - Sophomore goalie Karly Martin (Bristol, CT) made three saves for the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team, but the Colonials fell to host RPI in the Engineer Cup on Friday afternoon.
The Colonials rattled off 11 total shots with four of them tracking toward the net. Bailey McCullom (Cold Springs, NY) and Myah Croze (Bristol, CT) led the attack with four and three shots, respectively.
"We did not get too many quality chances today, against a solid veterans squad," said fourth-year WestConn head coach Alex Harrison. "It is that time of year, where we have to build everyday and hopefully we can come back tomorrow and capture a victory."
RPI was led by second-half goals from Jacqui Richard and Gigi Mecca. Richard was set up by a double assist from Alexis Gastrellon and Grace Heine at the 69:08 mark. Nearly nine minutes later, Olivia Spector's helper set up Mecca with an insurance goal.
Joey Lyons earned the victory in goal for RPI after making four saves in a clean sheet.
After a short rest, the Colonials will face Buffalo State University in the second round of the tournament. Game time against the Bengals is set for 12:30 pm on Saturday afternoon.
