Jancy Sherwood Cans Game-Winning Three With Eight Seconds Left In Win over Keene State

DANBURY, CT - Senior guard Jancy Sherwood (Poughqua, NY) buried a three-pointer with eight seconds remaining to lift the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team to a thrilling 74-71 victory over Keene State College at Feldman Arena on Wednesday night.

The Colonials, now 7-8 overall and 2-5 in the Little East Conference, led much of the second half, but trailed by two points, 71-69, following a jumper by the Owls' Jordyn Burke (Bennington, VT) with 3:14 left in regulation.  Burke's jumper in the lane capped off a 9-0 run by the visitors, but it turned out to be the last bucket by either squad until Sherwood's game-winner.

Sherwood finished with eight points, nearly half of her season average of 16.4, but the final three proved to be more important than any others.

WestConn had a balance offensive attack on Wednesday with Genesis Torres (Stratford, CT) and Asiah Knight (Norwalk, CT) each scoring a team-high 13 points while freshman Hanna Maghini (Bristol, CT) added a dozen points to the cause.

Keene State's Lilly Shlimon (Pelham, NH) led all players with 18 points while Burke and Tamra Gonyea (Meriden, CT) added 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Burke finished with a hard-faught double-double, yanking down 12 rebounds for the Owls.

Jessica Davis (Hamden, CT) collected 11 caroms to lead the Colonials on the boards.

The Owls, now 2-14 overall and winless in the conference at 0-8, built a six-point lead, 31-24, following a lay in from Burke with 3:40 left in the second stanza.  WestConn scored eight of the period's final 10 points to take a 36-33 lead into the break.

WestConn travels for a scheduled back-to-back LEC road weekend beginning with Saturday's game at University of Massachusetts Boston.  Tip-off with the Beacons is slated for 1 pm.  Then the Colonials are slated to battle the University of Southern Maine on Sunday, January 20 in a make-up of January 10th postponed affair.  Game time against the Huskies is set for 3 pm.

Keene State plays host to those same Huskies on Saturday, January 19.  Game time is set for 1 pm in the Granite State.
