NEW HAVEN, CT – Despite a game-high 33 points from senior guard Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, NY), the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball squad saw its four game winning streak come to an end with a 118-103 loss at non-conference foe Albertus Magnus on Tuesday night. With the loss, the Colonials dropped to 4-2 overall while the Falcons improved to 4-0.
Junior guard Gabrielle Hurlbert (Thomaston, CT) and rookie guard Imani Baptiste (Bronx, NY) added 15 points piece for the visitors, while junior Genesis Torres (Stratford, CT) and senior Tashai Price (Vernon, CT) also notched double figures with 14 and 11, respectively.
Senior guard Jill Johnson (North Haven, CT) paced the hosts with 27 points and a game-high 12 assists, while junior forward Rah Rah Thompson (Bridgeport, CT) notched a double-double of her own with 26 points and a game-high 20 rebounds.
The Falcons finished the contest shooting a scorching 47-of-88 (53.4%) from the field, while the Colonials managed 36-of-108 (33.3%). The hosts also moved the ball well as they dished out 29 assists, while the visitors ended with 11 dimes.
The game began close before Albertus Magnus rattled off a 15-0 run, extending their lead to 35-18 when senior Kristin Cunning (Hoboken, NJ) capped the spurt with a three-pointer to begin the second quarter, which ultimately cemented the win.
The hosts would maintain the advantage for the remainder of the contest as WestConn was unable to shrink the deficit under nine points.
The Colonials return to action for their Little East Conference opener at Rhode Island College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
