Women's Basketball Utilizes Massive Third Quarter to Down Hunter, 98-87

NEW YORK, NY – The Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team erupted for 40 third quarter points on a staggering 17-of-28 (60.7%) shooting from the field en route to a 98-87 non-conference victory at Hunter College on Tuesday night. With the win, the Colonials stretched their win streak to four, improving to 4-1 overall while the Hawks dropped to 1-3.

Senior guard Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, NY) tallied a team-high 21 points for the visitors, while rookie forward Katelyn Fanning (Dobbs Ferry, NY) added a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Junior guard Genesis Torres (Stratford, CT) chipped in 12 points and a game-high seven steals.

Janine Conway and Jade Aponte paced the hosts with 26 points apiece. Conway also pulled down 11 boards.

WestConn would trail 48-47 at halftime. However, the Colonials erupted to outscore the Hawks, 40-12, in the third. Reigning Little East Conference Rookie of the Week Amani Baptiste (Bronx, NY) sparked the spurt with a layup to give WestConn a 49-48 lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way. First-year guard Hannah Maghini (Bristol, CT) – who finished with 17 points – rounded out the barrage with a hoop as the third expired, giving the Colonials an 87-60 lead. They would cruise through the final quarter.

WestConn returns to action at non-league foe Albertus Magnus on November 27 at 5 p.m.
