DANBURY, CT - Junior shortstop Charline Plasczynski (Bristol, CT) and Rachel Mirel (New Fairfield, CT) each had three hits as the Western Connecticut State University softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Mount St. Mary College at Westside Field on a cold and windy Thursday night.
Angelina Miller (Holbrook, NY) went four strong innings and is now 4-0 on the mound for the Colonials, which improve to 12-6 on the season. She allowed four singles and struck out three after facing just 17 batters.
Junior Sara Tenke (Glen Cove, NY) earned her first save of the season after allowing just one hit over the final three innings. She too struck out three for the winners.
In the opener, Nicole Bonanni (Norwalk, CT) registered a ground-out run batted in WestConn's third inning. She pushed across Jordan Fitzsimons (Bristol, CT) who had led off the frame with a bunt single. She later moved over to third base following another bunt single, this time by Mirel.
The scored stood at 1-0 until the Colonials scored three runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, NY) suffered the loss for the Knights and is now 1-2 on the season. She allowed four runs on eight hits, struck out three and walked two.
In the polar nightcap, Plasczynski went 2-for-3 with an RBI single and scored a run for WestConn.
The Colonials led 4-0 after the third inning, but could not add to their lead the rest of the way.
Mount St. Mary scored its lone run in the top of the seventh inning when Victoria Santomauro (Eastchester, NY) delivered an unearned sacrifice fly to plate Lauren Oury (Bethpage, NY). Oury reached on an outfield error to lead off the final inning.
Jaclyn Smith (Sandwich, MA) earned the victory after going four and one-third innings. She did not allow a run and gave up four hits, struck out three and walked one. The senior right hander is now 2-2 on the season.
Freshman Alyssa Lionetti (Brookfield, CT) tallied her second save of the season after yielding an unearned run without allowing a hit over the final two and two-third innings. She struck out one Knight.
MacKenzie Hymes (Middletown, DE) drops to 2-6 on the season after giving four runs, only one of the earned over four innings. She struck out two and walked one.
Christen Hansen (Cypress, CA) struck out three and walked one without allowing a hit over the final two innings.
WestConn plays host to Keene State College on Sunday, April 7. The Little East Conference doubleheader is set to begin at noon.
NOTE: Saturday's league twinbill at Plymouth State University has already been moved to Sunday, April 21 due to an impending storm in the Live Free Of Die state.
