BOSTON, MA – Junior attackman Eric Caldwell (East Moriches, NY) and rookie Donald Schaumloffel netted three goals apiece but it wasn't enough as the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team dropped its regular season finale at UMass-Boston, 16-10, in a Little East Conference matchup on a stormy Friday night.
Both teams endured torrential rain and a lightning delay and will find out their respective opponents in the upcoming LEC Postseason Championship Tournament upon the conclusion of Sunday's other league action. The Colonials fell to 10-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play and will likely host a first round game on Tuesday. The Beacons improved to 4-13 and 3-5, while claiming the final spot as the No. 6 seed. The tournament bracket will be announced this weekend on www.LittleEast.tv.
However, the Beacons responded with a 6-2 run to take hold of an 11-5 halftime advantage. The Colonials were unable to answer in the second half as they could not get the lead under five goals. However, WestConn rookie goalkeeper Derek Strine (Bayport, NY) came on in relief to play the entire second half, surrendering just five goals and recording five saves.
WestConn awaits the conclusion of this weekend's other LEC action to determine their place in the postseason slated to begin on Tuesday. The top two seeds receive a bye, while No. 3 and No. 4 will host a first-rounder.
