Field Hockey Utilizes Balanced Scoring Attack to Down Regis, 4-1

WESTON, MA – Four different players tallied goals as the Western Connecticut State University field hockey unit downed non-conference foe Regis College at Regis Stadium on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Colonials improved to 4-0 overall while the Pride fell to 0-2.

"This was a strong non-conference win for us. We moved the ball well and had solid offensive output. However, we still need to protect our defensive circle better and eliminate corners against," said WestConn head coach Dani McDonnell following her squad's fourth straight victory.

Senior forward Morgan Matthews (Bethel, CT) paced the Colonials with a goal and an assist while junior goalie Neve Manion (Newington, CT) notched her fourth win of the season and turned aside one Regis shot.

The Colonials burst out to a 1-0 lead in the first quarter when senior midfielder Jacalyn Doerwald (Washington, CT) blasted home an unassisted scoring strike.

WestConn stretched the advantage to 3-0 in the second when classmate Carly Matasavage (Middlebury, CT) and Matthews each found the back of the cage.

The Pride responded in third with a tally to narrow the gap to 3-1. However, WestConn junior forward Amanda Spano (Mahopac, NY) relinquished all hopes of any Regis comeback when she took a pass from Matthews and drilled home a shot in the fourth to wrap the count up at 4-1.

The visitors outshot the hosts, 17-5, and also held command of the penalty corner category, 12-3.

WestConn seeks to remain undefeated when they head to non-league opponent Vassar on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
