Austin Calamita Catches Two Touchdowns As Colonials Stay Perfect

FRAMINGHAM, MA - Senior wide receiver Austin Calamita (North Branford, CT) caught a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter and the Western Connecticut State University fpptball team went on to defeat Fitchburg State University, 33-12, in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on a cold and rainy day at Elliot Field.

The Colonials remain percect and are now 8-0 overall and atop the MASCAC standings with a 6-0 mark.  Fitchburg State fall to 1-7 and 1-5 MASCAC.

Senior quarterback David James (Stamford, CT) connected with Calamita from 16 and 47 yards at the 12:55 and 7:10 marks of the first stanza, respectively.  They second WestConn TD and ensuing point-after conversions by Jordan D'Onofrio (Orange, CT) proved to be the game-winner.

Calamita finished the day with a game-high eight catches and 103 yards while James completed 12-of-20 passes for 165 and the two TD tosses.

Running back Kyle McKinnon (New London, Conn.) extended the lead to 20-0 with just nine seconds left in the first quarter. The senior has a short two-yard rush for the score.  After a failed two-point conversion, the Colonials headed to the second period with a comfortable advantage, in far but pleasant weather conditions.

McKinnon, last week's MASCAC Offensive Player of the Week, carried the ball 15 times for 71 yards.

The Green and Gold cracked the scoreboard just before halftime.  Pinned deep in their own end, senior Sterlin Garvin (Canton, MA) broke through the Colonials defense for an 83-yard run to the WestConn two yard line. One play later Gavin broke the plane to cut the deficit to 20-6.

After intermission, James pushed the Colonials lead to 27-6 with a four yard run at 11:45 of the third stanza, and running back Khalil Patterson (Hartford, CT) added a nine-yard touchdown and a 33-6 advantage for the visitors.

Falcons' running back Garvin finished the scoring with a 66-yard touchdown late in the fourth frame for the 33-12 final.

As the Colonials in two weeks, a pre-game ceremony the Falcons recognized ten seniors for their contributions to the football program. Sterlin Garvin, Jovon White, Cyrick Watford, Chris Tamukedde, Herbert Acosta, Jacqua Solomon, Jared Citizen, Marquis Caulton, Stephen Armand and Jayson Urato were honored in front of the announced crowd of 425.

Gavin finished with 246-yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns to pace the Falcons.

FSU quarterback Brandon Brown (Lake Mary, FL) was 8-for-20 for 78-yards for the Falcons.

On the defensive side Jovon White (Meriden, CT) had seven total tackles while Melchior Lynch (Roxbury, MA) chipped in with 6.5 tackles for the hosts.

WestConn was led by Tariq Odom's (Bloomfield, CT) five total tackles.

Fitchburg State held the advantage in first downs (15-14) and rushing yards (273-131)

Next Saturday, the Falcons will travel to Plymouth State University for a noontime kickoff with the Panthers while the Colonials will host the Rams of Framingham State University at 5 pm at the Westside Athletic Complex.
