DANBURY, Conn. — In its first Little East Conference (LEC) win of the season, the Western Connecticut State University women's tennis team defeated the University of Southern Maine, 6-1, on Saturday at the Westside Courts. The Wolves improved to 2-4 and 1-1, while the Huskies dropped to 0-4 and 1-1 in the league.
The Wolves nabbed the doubles point after wins by partners
Lesley Coronel (Danbury, Conn.) and
Caroline Illescas (Danbury, Conn.) at No. 3 and
Erickah Tertulien (Norwalk, Conn.) and
Keira Hammond (Carmel, N.Y.) at No. 2 in back-to-back wins. Coronel and Illescas won their match 6-2, while Tertulien and Hammond boasted a 6-3 victory. The Huskies won at No. 1 Doubles, but the Wolves already had the advantage. At No. 2, Tertulien and Hammond came back from an 0-3 deficit and won six straight games to win the match giving WestConn the doubles point. At No. 1,
Eilynn Pierre (Queens Village, N.Y.) and
Kate Robinson (Brookfield, Conn.) also battled back from an 0-3 deficit, but fell short 4-6.
In No. 5 Singles,
Elsie Sabol (Pleasantville, N.Y.) put the Wolves up 3-0, followed by Hammond's match point in the sixth spot. Tertulien, Pierre and Coronel also won in singles in the top three spots and went 2-0 on the day as Coronel secured her first two wins of the season.
WestConn hits the road to face non-conference foe Farmingdale State College on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
"The ladies significantly rebounded from yesterday's performance and played well," head coach
Shawn Stillman said. "We played consistently and intelligently, and that made the difference."
