PURCHASE, N.Y. —
Kendall Allen (Naugatuck, Conn.) recorded her 100th career hit after connecting for three in the Western Connecticut State University softball team's doubleheader road sweep over Purchase College on Thursday. The Wolves nabbed a dominant 9-1 win in game one after six innings, ignited by a three-run bomb in the first inning off the bat of Allen and a come-from-behind game two victory, 6-4, in the eighth inning. WestConn improved to 7-13, while Purchase dropped to 11-9 on the season.
In game one, the Wolves took a strong 6-0 lead across the first, second and fourth innings. Allen initiated the unanswered runs with a three-run homer out of centerfield to bring home
Sera DeBaggis (Mendon, Mass.) and
Jaycee Filancia (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.). All three Wolves also tallied RBIs in the scoring stretch. In the fifth inning,Â
Julia Valukis (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) brought in a run on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch to give the visitors an 8-1 lead. Allen's sacrifice fly to right field again brought Filancia back to the den for WestConn's final run of game one in the top of the sixth.
Filancia managed to get on base at every at-bat after going 2-for-3 and a walk, along with a trio of runs scored and an RBI. Allen also hit 2-for-3 with five RBIs and a run.
After two scoreless innings, the hosts took a four-run lead in the bottom of the third inning in game two.Â
Lorelei Stancavage's (Bristol, Conn.) double to right center put the Wolves on the board in the fourth as
Alexis Resto (Shelton, Conn.) scored, followed by a single up the middle by
Francesca Foster (Mystic, Conn.), bringing Stancavage back to the plate. In the fifth and seventh innings, Valukis came in clutch with an RBI each inning to bring home DeBaggis both times and knot the game at four apiece, which forced extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Stancavage again hit a double, but this time to centerfield to bring Resto home, and gave the Wolves the 5-4 edge. Three batters later, Filancia grounded out to shortstop to give Stancavage the chance to pad the visitors' lead by one.
With the potential game-winning run at bat,
Olivia Bordenaro (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) came in for relief with no outs and two on base in the bottom of the eighth. Bordenaro's first batter, Liv Goff, reached first on a fielder's choice as Allen threw the ball to Filancia to get the first out of the inning at second base. On the next play, Tyler Salerno lined into a double play as Resto at first got the batter out before her tag of Goff also secured the final out of the game.
Bordenaro secured the win in game one and a save in the second, while
Madison Mandra (Bethpage, N.Y.) secured the game two win. DeBaggis had a career-high four stolen bases in game two.
WestConn remains on the road for its third-straight day as they travel to Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.) on April 10 for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
