DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University Wolves dropped both games of a doubleheader, 17/8-4/5, to the visiting University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Corsairs in Little East Conference (LEC) softball action this afternoon at Westside Field. WestConn drops to 10-22 overall and 1-11 in the LEC and sees its losing streak extended to eight games in a row. The Corsairs improve to 22-8 overall and 9-3 in the league. Alexis Resto (Shelton, Conn.) starred at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three runs, two doubles, and a solo homer.
UMass Dartmouth scored five runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth to go ahead, 7-0. WestConn junior
Julia Valukis (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) singled and Resto doubled, followed by a two-run double by junior Lorelai Stancavage (Bristol, Conn.) to make the score, 7-2, after four frames. The Corsairs scored twice more in the fifth before Wolves senior SS
Jaycee Filancia (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) singled and scored in the bottom of the inning, but the visitors tacked on seven runs in the sixth including six on three-run homers by Olivia Silva and Chloe Edwards. Olivia Bordenaro (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) fell to 6-8. Resto and Stancavage had two hits for the Wolves.
In the second game, WestConn trailed, 6-0, in the fourth inning and, 7-1, after five frames but rallied in its final turn at bat. Freshman
Giulia Scibilia (Carle Place, N.Y.) walked and scored the first Wolves run after a Corsair outfielder made an error on a Valukis single in the fourth inning. In the seventh, Valukis led off with a double and scored on a two-base error resulting from a hard-hit ball to short by Resto. Resto scored on a single by rookie
Serenity Ortega (Riverside, Calif.) and Scibilia plated another run on a groundout to make the score, 8-4, with runners on second and third. WestConn junior 2B
Kendall Allen (Naugatuck, Conn.) knocked home another run and the tying run would have to come to the plate had UMass Dartmouth not thrown behind Allen who was rounding first and recorded the third on a close tag play back to the base.
