SPRINGFIELD, Mass. —
Alex Maldonado (Danbury, Conn.) won in Singles and Doubles action in Western Connecticut State University's men's tennis team's 5-2 road loss at Western New England University on Tuesday. The Wolves dropped to 5-12 overall and the Golden Bears improved to 9-11 on the season.
WNEU nabbed the first two Doubles to clinch the point, but partners Maldonado and
Henry Gsell (Bridgewater, Conn.) won 6-4 at No. 3. The host took the opening Singles point with a win at No. 3, but Maldonado evened the score with a straight-sets win (6-0, 6-1). The home team clinched Singles with wins at No. 6, 5, and 2, respectively.
Aidan Burke (Wilton, Conn.) dropped the opening set at No. 1 in a 6-1 loss, but the senior earned a 7-5 win in the second. Burke secured the victory in the third set following a 10-6 win.
"We knew today would be a tough match, but we were in a few courts where we lost," head coach Shawn Stillman said. "We need to do better and play smarter in these situations, especially in doubles. I certainly see the improvement though and that is encouraging."
The Wolves return home for their last home match of the season on Friday against Farmingdale State College at 3:30 p.m. on the Westside Tennis Courts.
