PROVIDENCE, R.I. —
Alexis Resto (Shelton, Conn.) and
Victoria Wiatrak (Cromwell, Conn.) both sent the ball soaring out of left field, but the Western Connecticut State University softball team dropped a Little East Conference (LEC) doubleheader at Rhode Island College on Tuesday. WestConn lost a close contest in game one 10-7, but RIC took a commanding 12-1 win in game two. The Wolves moved to 10-16 and 1-7 in the league, while the Anchormen improved to 19-7 and 4-2.
In game one, Resto's two-RBI home run brought
Julia Valukis (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) home in the second inning, followed by a sacrifice fly by
Serenity Ortega (Riverside, Calif.) to drive in
Lorelei Stancavage (Bristol, Conn.) for a 3-0 visitors' lead. Through the second and fourth frames, RIC took a 6-3 edge.
Kendall Allen's (Naugatuck, Conn.) double to right field sent
Jaycee Filancia (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and
Deanna Reimo (Holtsville, N.Y.) back to plate to narrow the gap to one in the top of the fifth. Wiatrak's two-run homer sent
Sophia Ochs (Bethel, Conn.) back to the plate for a Westconn 7-6 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Olivia Brett's single up the middle knotted the score at seven before the hosts scored three more times.
In game two, Stancavage put the Wolves on the board in the third inning, but RIC had the 8-1 lead.
WestConn returns home for a home doubleheader against non-conference opponent Wesleyan University on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
