ORLANDO, Fla. - The Western Connecticut State University Wolves were beaten, 4-0, in a rain-shortened, men's tennis season opener this afternoon at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Tennis Center. The Wolves will continue play in the Sunshine State tomorrow with an 11:30 a.m. match against the St. John's University Johnnies. Scranton won the doubles point and then took three singles matches to clinch the decision. The remainder of the singles matches, which were changed to eight-game pro sets to beat the weather, were left unfinished.
In doubles, sophomores
Henry Gsell (Bridgewater, Conn.) and
Alex Maldonado (Danbury, Conn.) teamed up for a 6-1 victory in the No. 3 spot, giving Maldonado his first NCAA victory in his collegiate debut. At first doubles, senior
Aidan Burke (Wilton, Conn.) and sophomore
Jose Zambrano (Danbury, Conn.) fought off two match points before finally succumbing and losing their match, 6-4. In singles, Scranton took points at No. 3,4, and 6. Burke was leading 5-3, at the top of the ladder but was unable to finish the match.
