MILTON, Mass. - The Western Connecticut State University women's tennis squad won five of six singles matches and took the doubles point to down non-conference foe Curry College, 6-1, on Friday afternoon.
The Wolves clinched the doubles point by winning the bottom two flights. Graduate Student Lesley Coronel (Danbury, Conn.) and Junior Keira Hammond (Carmel, N.Y.) shut out Serenity Doty and Ava McMillian, 6-0, at No. 2. Junior Caroline Illescas (Danbury, Conn.) and Freshman Giselle Solorzano (Danbury, Conn.) defeated Sam Caul and Tyra Mitchell, 6-2, at No. 3. At No. 1, Sophomore Eilynn Pierre (Queens Village, N.Y.) and Junior Kate Robinson (Brookfield, Conn.) lost to Phoebe Sartory and Cadence Roberts, 6-4.
WestConn then took five of six singles matches, all in straight sets:
- No. 2: Coronel over Roberts 7-5, 6-3.
- No. 3: Robinson over McMillian 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 after winning the first-set tiebreak.
- No. 4: Junior Elsie Sabol (Pleasantville, N.Y.) over Mitchell 6-2, 6-0.
- No. 5: Hammond over Caul 6-1, 6-0.
- No. 6: Illescas over Doty 6-0, 6-1.
Curry's lone point came at No. 1 singles, where Sartory edged Pierre 6-4, 6-3.
WestConn will seek to keep things moving in a positive direction when they travel to Little East Conference nemesis Plymouth State on Saturday.
