Four WestConn Teams Move On In Little East Conference Championships

DANBURY, CT - Four Western Connecticut State University fall programs earned hosting duties for the Little East Conference Tournament and all four teams are still alive.  Field hockey amd men's soccer, captured exciting victories in its first-round contests on Tuesday, and the women's soccer and women's volleyball will all host semifinals on Thursday.

FIELD HOCKEY

Worcester State University secured the 2019 Little East Conference (LEC) field hockey regular season championship and the No. 1 Seed in next week's LEC Championship Tournament with Saturday's 3-1 victory over Western Connecticut State University in the regular season finale for both teams. The Lancers improved to 16-4 overall defeated sixth-seeded UMass Dartmouth, 7-0, on Tuesday.

Keene State College (14-7, 10-2) won their tie-break with WestConn (15-4, 10-2) to secured the No. 2 seed. The six-time defending champion Owls blanked seventh-seeded Plymouth State University (8-10, 6-6), 4-0, while the Colonials edged No. 6 Salem State University (10-8, 6-6), 3-2 in the quarterfinals.

No. 4 University of Southern Maine (13-8, 10-2) defeated No. 5 Castleton University (11-8, 8-4), 2-0 to round out the first-round pairings.

MEN'S SOCCER

After going a near-perfect 7-1-0 in Little East Conference (LEC) play, Eastern Connecticut State University will be the No. 1 seed in next week's LEC Championship Tournament.

The Warriors enter the conference tournament with an overall record of 16-2-0, and are currently ranked 23rd in the nation according to the D3soccer.com poll. Eastern Connecticut receives an opening round bye, and host a semifinal match against the No. 4 Western Connecticut State University (13-4-3, 5-2-1).  The Colonials defeated No. 5 UMass Boston, 4-5 on penalty kicks after drawing to a 0-0 tie after two overtimes on Tuesday.

Keene State College secured the No. 2 seed in the LEC tournament after going 6-2-0 in league play during the regular season, and also receives a First Round bye. The Owls will host either No. 3 Rhode Island College (9-6-2, 5-2-1) or UMass Dartmouth (8-7-2, 3-4-1) in the semifinals.  The Anchormen and UMD's quarterfinal match-up was postponed on Tuesday, due to unplayable field conditions.  It will be played on Wednesday, November 6.

Due to the postponement, the semifinals have been moved to Friday, November 8 and the championship to Sunday, November 10, at the highest remaining seed.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

UMass Boston and Western Connecticut both earned a share of the 2019 Little East Conference (LEC) women's soccer regular season title after battling to a draw on the final day of the regular season, and it was the Beacons who prevailed for the No. 1 seed in next week's conference tournament following the application of the LEC's tie-breaking procedures.

Both the Beacons (17-2-1, 7-0-1) and Colonials (13-5-2, 7-0-1) receive a First Round bye and will host a Semifinal Round match Thursday.

UMass Boston will take on No. 4 Eastern Connecticut State University (7-11) which defeated No. 5 Plymouth State University (8-10, 4-4), 1-0 in the quarterfinals.  WestConn will face No. 6 Castleton University (10-9, 4-4) which upsed No. 3 Keene State College (10-9), 4-2 on Tuesday.

Each match of the 2019 LEC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament will be streamed live on the LEC Network – LittleEast.tv.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball was one of three teams to tie for the top spot in the finals Little East Conference standings, giving the Colonials a share of the 2019 LEC regular season title, and merged as the No. 1 seed for the 2019 LEC Championship Tournament following the application of the conference tie-breakers. WestConn will enter the LEC tournament with an overall record of 21-6, which includes a 6-2 record in conference play.

The Colonials will battle UMass Boston in one semfinal match on Thursday while the Warriors face Plymouth State.

Eastern Connecticut State University (14-11, 6-2) claimed the No. 2 seed by virtue of the tie-breaker.

The No. 3 Panthers defeated sixth-seeded University of Southern Maine (16-17, 4-4), 3-0 in Tuesday's first round.

The second first round match between No. 4 UMass Boston 10-9-19, 5-3) and No. 5 Keene State College (23-9) went to a fourth set before the Beacons prevailed, 3-1.
