DANBURY, CT – Senior outside hitter Kamari King (East Hartford, CT) tallied match-highs of 13 and nine kills in victories over FDU-Florham and Lasell, respectively, as the WestConn women's volleyball squad opened the 2018 season in Day One of the Colonials Classic at Feldman Arena on Friday. The Colonials blanked the Devils, 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-21) before shutting out the Pride, 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 27-25) improving to 2-0 overall. WestConn returns to action for Day Two on Saturday at 10 a.m. against Salve Regina before concluding play versus Simmons at 2 p.m.
It was all Colonials in the season-opener against FDU-Florham. Junior Alyssa Dam (Poughkeepsie, NY) chipped in with seven kills, while senior Mikayla Aubry (Fresno, CA) and sophomore Victoria Korzan (Southbury, CT) added six apiece for the Colonials. WestConn senior setter Jenna Skerritt (Wolcott, CT) dished out a match-high 30 assists.
With the hosts ahead 2-0 in the nightcap, they trailed midway through the third game. However, they chipped away at the advantage and knotted the count at 25-25 with some stellar blocks from Aubry, Dam and sophomore Nyilah Horton (Centennial, CO). King rounded the comeback out with a service ace.
"I thought we played well tonight. Our passing was consistent and our blocking showed improvement," said WestConn head coach Don Ferguson following the wins. "We have a lot of returning players and they displayed some growth from last year," he concluded.
