Sherwood Named MVP And WestConn Defeats Brandeis, 104-95

WALTHAM, MA - Senior guard Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, NY) was named Most Valuable Player after scoring 17 points in Western Connecticut State University's 104-95 victory over host Brandeis University in the championship game of the Judges' Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Sherwood finished with 17 points on 5-of-14 shooting from the field including hitting 3-of-12 attempts from beyond the three-point arc.

Frances Snyder (Pine Plains, NY) led the Colonials with 21 points, connecting on 5-of-13 shots from long distance.  She was named to the All-Tournament Team on Saturday.

Three other Colonials scored in double figures including freshman Imani Baptiste (Bronx, NY), who scored 13 points and Gabrielle Hurlbert (Thomaston, CT) and Genesis Torres (Stratford, CT) which each netted 11 points for the winners.

WestConn, now 3-1 and winners of three straight, shot just 32% from three-point range, but quantity out-shined quality as it hoisted up 60 attempts from behind the line, canning 19 of them.

Brandeis, now 1-1, was led by Shannon Smally who scored 21 points.  Four other Judges scored in double digits.  Camila Casanueva and Sarah Jaromin contributed 16 and 14 points, respectively while Jillian Petrie and Amber Graves chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively, in the loss.

Freshman Katelyn Fanning (Dobbs Ferry, NY) led the Colonials with five rebounds while Smally yanked down a game-high 12 caroms for Brandeis.

After trailing by four points, 45-41 after the second quarter, WestConn outscored the Judges, 63-50 in the second half.  A three-point jumper from Genesis with 58 seconds remaining in the third quarter put the Colonials up, 65-64 and they never trailed again.

The Colonials travel to Hunter College for a non-conference game on Tuesday, November 20.  Tip off is scheduled for 5 pm.
