FORT MYERS, FL – The Western Connecticut State University softball squad edged Blackburn, 5-4, before falling to Wilmington (OH), 6-5, on Wednesday afternoon on Day Five of their Spring trip. With the split, the Colonials moved to 6-2 overall and return to action tomorrow against Rockford at 9 a.m. before meeting North Central (MN) at 11 a.m.
At the time of this writing, no box score was available for the contest versus Blackburn.
In Game Two, senior pitcher Jaclyn Smith (Sandwich, MA) put together yet another strong effort during the trip, tossing a complete game while giving up just two earned runs and striking out three.
With the score deadlocked at 4-4 in the fifth, junior Charlene Plasczynski (Bristol, CT) stroked a double to left-center, pushing sophomore Rachel Mirel (New Fairfield, CT) across the plate after she reached on a walk, giving the Colonials a 5-4 advantage.
However, Wilmington tallied an unearned run in the seventh before an RBI single through the left side put them ahead for good, 6-5. With a runner on third, the final pair of WestConn batters would strike out to end the game.
"We continue to learn and grow as a team, today was all about growing and learning to push through adversity," stated WestConn head coach Heather Stone following the action.
The Colonials will look to rebound tomorrow before concluding the trip of Friday.
