NAPLES, FL – After splitting a pair games to open the season on Saturday, the Western Connecticut State University softball team got right back to work on Sunday. The Colonials swept a twinbill with a 10-2 victory over Lesley followed by a 10-0 shutout win against St. Joseph (Conn.) on Day Two of their Spring Trip. WestConn improved to 3-1 overall and will meet New Jersey City and Alfred State on Monday starting at 11 a.m.
"Our pitching continued to dominate today and I was very happy with our offensive production by the entire team," said Colonial head coach Heather Stone following the doubleheader. "Our batteries have continued to be very impressive and we had great relief pitching from freshman Alyssa Lionetti and junior Angelina Miller," she added.
WestConn erupted for nine runs in the first inning in the opener against Lesley. Sophomore Annie Rosa (Washington, CT) rounded out the flurry with a single to drive in a pair of runs. Senior starting pitcher Jaclyn Smith (Sandwich, MA) picked up right where she left off yesterday, tossing four innings and striking out three to earn the victory.
In Game Two, the WestConn power surge continued against St. Joseph. Juniors Erica Bower (Hillsborough, NJ) and Charline Plasczynski (Bristol, CT) led the charge, combining for five hits and three RBI's to lead the Colonials. Classmate Sara Tenke (Glen Cove, NY) and sophomore Rachel Mirel (New Fairfield, CT) tacked on two hits apiece. Tenke also tossed the shutout, while striking out seven and surrendering just three base knocks.
WestConn will seek to keep its three-game win streak alive on Day Three of the Florida trip tomorrow.
