Seven WestConn Seniors Enjoy Win Over Elms, 4-0

DANBURY, CT - DANBURY, CT - The Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team celebrated Senior Night with a convincing 4-0 victory over visiting Elms College at the Westside Athletic Complex on Tuesday night.

WestConn, now 13-3-3, took the lead almost immediately as Chauncey Allers (Wilton, CT) scored the game's first goal just 96 seconds after the opening whistle. It was his 21st goal of the season came following a feed from Matthew Restrepo (Bridgeport, CT).

The Colonials doubled their lead late in the first half as Max Cano (Stratford, CT) scored his third goal of the season after a swift pass from Ricardo Rodriguez (Danbury, CT) in the 39th minute to make it 2-0.

Western Connecticut expanded the lead to 3-0 early in the second half when Matthew Restrepo scored five minutes into the half.

Following a nifty heel pass from Mikey Sciortino (Shelton, CT), Naseem Thompson (Torrington, CT) added an 80th minute goal for the 4-0 victory.  It was Thompson's second marker of his first campaign.

The Colonials held a 24-5 lead in total shots and 11-1 advantage in shots on goal in the game.

A trio of net minders pitch a shut out for WestConn.  Senior Luca DiCarlo (Waterbury, CT) was unchallenged over the first 52 minutes before yielding to Daniel Szabo (Trumbull, CT).  Szabo, during 27 minutes of work, made the team's only save.  Matthew D'Onofrio (Orange, CT) closed out the games' final 11 minutes.

Blazer goalkeeper AJ Oliveira (Beacon Falls, CT) made seven saves in the loss.

WestConn travels to Plymouth State University on October 27 for a 12:30 pm meeting with the Panthers.  A win on Saturday will secure a home game in the quarterfinals of the upcoming Little East Conference Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, October 30.

"This group has been through a lot over the last four years, with a coaching change and new expectations," said third-year head coach Joe Mingachos.  "We set our goals in the pre-season to defend our LEC title, and big step toward that outcome begins with Saturday's final regular-season game.  It would be nice to be at home for that first round game."

The Blazers wrap up the regular season in the New England Collegiate Conference finale at Dean College on Oct. 27 at noon. Western Connecticut wraps up the regular season at Plymouth State on Oct. 27.
