CASTLETON, VT - Seniors Aaron Samuel (Stratford, CT) and Rashard Rodriguez (Trumbull, CT) scored 14 and 13 points, respectively and the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team defeated Castleton University, 67-53 at Glenbrook Gym on Saturday night.

The Colonials, now 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the Little East Conference, have now won five of their last six games.

The Spartans, in their first year as members of the LEC, fall to 3-9 and are winless at 0-4 in league action.

Samuel gathered a team-high eight rebounds while Ronald Jefferson (Brooklyn, NY) and Fenton Bradley, Jr. (Mansfield, CT) Ceach pulled down six caroms for the winners.

Casey Belade and Eric Shaw each scored 10 points to lead the hosts.  Ben Mrowka hauled down a team-high seven rebounds for Castleton.

A dunk by Samuel with 7:46 left before intermission capped off a 14-4 run for the Colonials and knotted the contest at 19-19.  A lay-up with 5:31 remaining in the first stanza, from Bradley, Jr., extended the visitor's offensive explosion and pushed the lead to seven points, 26-19.

Castleton regained the lead in the early going of the second half, 38-37, when Shaw canned a three-pointer with 17:14 remaining in the game.

A 17-1 run by WestConn, capped off by another dunk from Samuel at the 11:18 mark, put the visitors ahead, 54-39 and dismissed any ideas of a home-team comeback.

The Colonials continue their three-game road trip on Tuesday, January 8 when they travel to University of Southern Maine.  Game time with the Huskies is set to tip off at 5 pm.
