FORT PIERCE, FL - Senior right fielder Kyle MacLean (Southington, CT) went 5-for-8, hit a pair of home runs and drove in five runs, but the Western Connecticut State University baseball team dropped a twinbill to Kenyon College, 18-9 and 12-7 at Gladwin Sports Complex on Thursday afternoon.
In the opener, MacLean went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and a pair of RBI singles, but the Colonials, now 1-9, could not hold on to their 6-5 lead after the second inning. In the second game, he went 2-for-4 with a two-run shot to deep left center field.
Erik Merrill (Poughkeepsie, NY) went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader and had a run-scoring single in the opener.
Matt Mancini (Waterbury, CT) belted a solo home run in the night cap for the Colonials.
The Lords made the best of three massive innings, scoring five runs in the second and third innings then closing out any chance of a WestConn comeback with six runs in the top of the sixth inning. By then, they had a 16-8 advantage and did not look back.
Trenton DiFilippo went 2-for-3 and delivered a grand-slam home run on the first pitch he saw from Michael Esposito (Plainfield, CT) in the sixth inning.
Alex Gow went 2-for-4 and drove in five runs, most of them coming from a three-run double in the second inning.
George Bielizna (Danbury, CT) dropped to 0-2 on the season after yielding 10 earned runs over two and two third innings. He gave up 12 hits and hit one batter.
Zach Frizzera moves to 1-0 on the season after coming on for starter Will Allen in the second inning. Frizzera allowed two runs on three hits, struck out one and walked one.
Charlie Bailey earned his first save of the season after closing down WestConn over the final three innings. He allowed one run on one hit and struck out three.
In the afternoon game, Patrick O'Leary went 2-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in to pace Kenyon. Gow went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and scored three runs. Brent Henderson hit a solo home run for the winners.
Kienan Giller (Willington, CT) took the loss and is now 0-1 on the young season. He allowed allowed the final five runs on four hits after coming on in relief in the fifth inning. He struck out two and walked two.
WestConn starter Andrew Lojko (Trumbull, CT) went four innings, gave up six runs on six hits, struck out five and walked three. He gave way to Jeremy Mercier (Southington, CT), who allowed a run on two hits in a third of an inning.
Nathan Chandler improves to 1-3 after coming on in relief of starter Ross Scheinberg. Chandler allowed two runs on four hits, struck out six and walked one.
Scheinberg gave up five runs on eight hits and struck out four over the first three innings.
The Colonials were the victims of 16 strike outs on the day, including a dozen in the second game.
WestConn closes out its Florida trip on Friday with a meeting against Cairn University on Friday. First pitch between the Highlanders and Colonials is scheduled for 12:30 pm.
