FORT PIERCE, FL - The Western Connecticut State University baseball team dropped a pair of nine-inning games on Tuesday. The day opened with a 17-12 loss to Immaculata University before it finished on the short end of a slugfest with Wheaton College of Illinois, 24-13.
In the first game of the day, WestConn fell into an unfortunate hole, falling behind 15-1 after Immaculata batted in the bottom half of the third inning.
The Colonials also had a familiar flare for not giving in after large deficits. They put up six run in the top half of the fourth inning to cut their deficit to 15-7.
In that frame, Greg Campbell (Harwinton, CT) belted a two-RBI single to right center field to score Moe Ortiz-Echevarria (Norwalk, CT) and Logan Terry (Ellington, CT), both which drew walks earlier in the inning.
Kyle MacLean Southington, CT) closed out the six-run inning with an RBI double to plate Campbell.
WestConn yielded a pair of runs in the bottom half of that inning, but matched those two runs in the fifth inning when Matt Mancini (Waterbury. CT) scored on a wild pitch and Terry singled up the middle to score Jake Babon (Southington, CT).
Still within striking distance an inning later, the Colonials added three more runs, as Ortiz-Echevarria scored an unearned run and Mancini had a two-RBI single.
It was the closest that WestConn would get as it managed just a single in each of the last three innings.
Campbell finished with three runs batted in and score two runs while Mancini went 3-for-4 with a runs scored and two RBI.
Kyle Brelling (Bethel, CT) suffered the loss after going just one and a third innings. He gave up nine runs, five of them earned, on two hits. He walked four and struck out two and is now 0-1 on the year.
Leading Immaculata's 12-hit attack was Tom Prato, Peter Zielinski and Zach Van Meter who each had three runs batted in. Tyler Kmlec and Corey Pezak each had three hits for the winners.
Nick DeSantis came on in relief to earn the victory. He is now 1-0 on the year for IU.
Against Wheaton College of Illinois, WestConn raced out to a 10-4 lead after scoring nine runs in the top half of the second innings. Andrew Luis (Danbury, CT) capped off the rally with two runs batted in.
The Thunder went on to score 20 runs the rest of the way and finished the game with 26 hits.
George Bielizna (Danbury, CT) and Zach Edwards (Seymour, CT) each had three hits against Wheaton.
Joel Pierce and Caleb Grotelueschen together went 9-for-11, drove in 10 runs and scored seven runs for the winners.
Tyler Schilb (Pawling, NY) suffered the loss and is now 0-1 on the season. He allowed four runs on three hits and was one of five WestConn pitchers to yield a least three runs against Wheaton.
David Solfelt earned the victory after going five and one third innings in relief of starter Jacub Cassel. Solfelt allowed two runs on six hits and struck out three.
The Colonials, now 0-6, take on Delaware Valley in a doubleheader on Wednesday. The first pitch is slated for 10 am.
